I’ve never been much of a car person. I’ve driven lots of cars, but they have always been a method of getting myself or things from one place to another to me, nothing more. I have always had a fascination for gadgets though, and as more and more people pick up smartphones every day, I start to get the feeling of what It’s like to be a car enthusiast.

As long as I can remember, there was always a rivalry between certain brands of car manufacturers, or to be more precise, between owners of these brands of cars. Now the smartphone industry is growing up, the same thing is happening.

I always saw this as a friendly rivalry where friends would go “My car can do this!” “Oh yeah?, well mine’s got this!” Unfortunately, with smartphones, it’s more like a turf war, where the only right answer is whatever I have. I usually try and defuse the situation by ignoring them and changing the subject, but that’s not always possible, especially when the topic was brought up by mentioning a feature a particular phone or brand has.

Maybe I’m wrong, and people have always been militantly loyal to car brands and I didn’t notice because I never followed them, but I would hope that car fans were better than that, and hope that one day, people can grow up and realise that in the end, a phone is just a phone, and it’s okay for people to have different tastes.
